Painting a landscape in the studio is a contemplative experience. At its best, we are stretching a moment, reflecting more deeply upon a place, and expanding a mood. We will be taking our original inspiration through the process of making drawings and studies in preparation for the final painting. This process will improve our compositions, enrich our understanding of the scene, and clarify why we’ve chosen our subject. By bringing that work inside, we can sort through what is working and what is in the way. This can offer lessons for your next outdoor experience to gather reference material. While you are painting, I will provide assistance with questions, suggestions, and examples.
