Each day is unique and subject to the time, place, and weather. In this workshop, Joshua Cunningham will share how some foundational principles of the prismatic palette can deepen our understanding of how light and air reveal the world, helping us see and share in the gift of each day. Adults of all skill levels are welcome. It is my hope for you to have at least started several field studies during your time with me. While you are painting, I will go around offering assistance with the goal of helping and encouraging each of you to navigate the specific scene you chose to paint.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Explore painting outside and capture the beauty of summer in Bayfield on your canvas. This two-day retreat is an exploration of the joys of plein air painting, and may also include time inside the Wild Rice Retreat studio and the opportunity to paint the moonrise which is scheduled to occur on Sunday evening.

Joshua will outline his approach, review equipment, and demonstrate his technique. Students will have ample time to paint and will start three to four studies throughout the course of the weekend.

Painting a landscape from life is an immersive experience. All of our senses flow with the shifting seasons, marching sun, and drifting shadows. It is as inspiring, as it is challenging.

Painting a landscape in the studio offers a rich and interesting experience. At its best we are stretching a moment, reflecting more deeply upon a place, and expanding mood. We will be taking original inspirations, and move through the process of making drawings and studies for the purpose enriching our understanding of what we are attempting to create.
